A lock that becomes stiff or difficult to turn can eventually leave you unable to lock or unlock the door.
The problem may involve the key, lock mechanism, door alignment, or surrounding hardware.
1. Try the Door Open and Closed
If possible, test the lock while the door is open.
If the key turns easily with the door open but becomes difficult when the door is closed, the problem may be alignment between the lock and strike plate rather than the lock itself.
2. Check the Key
Inspect the key for obvious bending, damage, or excessive wear.
If you have another properly cut key for the same lock, carefully test it.
Do not force a key that feels stuck because it could break inside the lock.
3. Check Door Alignment
A sagging or swollen door can put pressure on the locking mechanism.
Look for signs that the door is rubbing against the frame or that the latch or deadbolt is not entering the strike plate cleanly.
4. Keep the Lock Clean
Dirt and debris can interfere with lock operation.
Use only products appropriate for the particular lock. Avoid filling the lock with random oils or household lubricants that may attract additional dirt.
5. Don’t Force the Lock
Using excessive pressure on a stiff lock can damage the key or internal mechanism.
If resistance suddenly becomes much worse, stop forcing it and have the cause investigated.
When Should You Call a Locksmith?
Consider calling a qualified locksmith if:
- The key repeatedly sticks
- The lock is becoming progressively harder to operate
- The key is damaged or breaks
- The lock works only when the door is pushed or pulled
- An exterior door cannot be securely locked
- The internal mechanism appears damaged
A lock that is becoming unreliable is easier to address before it fails completely.
